International responsibility and cooperation Commitment to stronger multilateralism: Germany’s co-facilitation of the Pact for the Future

In 2024, Germany and Namibia, working together as co-facilitators of the Pact for the Future, took a major step forwards in strengthening and modernising multilateralism.

The commitments of the member states as set out in the Pact provide numerous starting points for structural policy reforms to boost multilateral cooperation and configure multilateralism in such a way that it attains the goals of the 2030 Agenda and responds to new challenges.

Moreover, Germany stressed the particular importance of the year 2023 – the year of the mid-term review of the 2030 Agenda – and responded to the request of the UN Secretary-General to raise the level of ambition by presenting twelve key contributions. In subsequent reports, the German Government made submissions to the United Nations on how the twelve key contributions can be implemented. Germany hosted the first Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC) in 2024 with the goal of developing, in a common process, initiatives for structural change conducive to accelerated SDG implementation (selected outcomes (External link)).
