Circular economy PREVENT Waste Alliance – Together for a circular economy
The PREVENT Waste Alliance was initiated by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in 2019 and, since then, has grown into an internationally recognised multi-stakeholder partnership.
In the period covered by this report, and drawing on their cross-sectoral expertise, the members of the Alliance developed and implemented more than 35 solutions in five innovation programmes in order to generate circular value in the plastics, e-waste and organic waste sectors. For example, in Ethiopia, Côte d’Ivoire and Uganda, Black Soldier Fly technology is used to convert organic waste into protein-rich feed.
The PREVENT Waste Alliance also supports the global expansion of financing solutions for a circular economy. In October 2023, the Global Action Partnership for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) (External link) was launched for this purpose, aimed at supporting partner countries in setting up their own financing mechanisms in line with the EPR principle. This means that manufacturers are obliged to assume responsibility for the whole life cycle of their products and therefore also for recycling or disposal.
