Sustainable agricultural and food systems Strengthening Biodiversity: National Strategy on Genetic Resources
The National Strategy on Genetic Resources (External link), published in 2024, is aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources for nutrition, agriculture, forestry and fisheries in order to supply a growing world population with food and renewable raw materials. The diversity of crops and livestock, woody species of the forests, microorganisms, fungi and invertebrates, fish and other aquatic species is indispensable for the necessary adaptation to climate change, for the stability of agricultural and food systems, and for sustainable regional development.
Specifically, the four areas of action for genetic resources identified in the Strategy focus on:
- safeguarding their long-term conservation,
- supporting sustainable use,
- expanding knowledge and knowledge transfer, and
- boosting cooperation at all levels and utilising synergies meaningfully.
